How to find great keywords

thinking about all the hair I had to braid

Last week we discussed online visibility and the many layers of content creation. Missed the post? You can read it here!

This week, I’m sharing some of my favorite tools as it relates to best keywords for SEO best practices.

But before we get into the “nitty gritty” let’s get into the definition of the word “keyword” and the meaning behind it when it comes to search engines and optimization.

Simply put, keywords are words or sentences people type into search engines when looking for information.

STORY TIME

my 7 year old Micah

I’m a mother of two girls and my spunky 7 year old has a head full of hair; she recently requested box braids for her first day of 2nd grade.

The problem is I waited too long to book her hair appointment and the stylist had no more availability for the dates I requested.

You see my daughter had her heart set on walking into her second grade classroom with a head full of braids. So I did what any good mother would do. I went to GOOGLE and typed in the following query : easy ways to box braids my kid’s natural hair.

Notice how specific my search was? The more detailed you are the better your search results. This video was one of about 5,750,000 results and was the first one to pop up. Her video was originally posted on August 5th 2018, and is still one of the top ranking ones.

In order for people to find you, your business or your site, You need to be specific.

Think of hashtags on INSTAGRAM or even TIK TOK. Let’s say you were searching for black mothers in Chicago. If you were to simply type #moms your results would be very broad, if you were to search #Chicagomoms it would narrow your search, if you search #blackchicagomoms it would give you exactly what you’re looking for. The key to success when it comes to webpage visibility is in the details.

Now, let’s get into three free tools you can use to enhance your keywords.

The tools are pretty self explanatory, so for the sake of brevity I’m simply going to share the links and allow you to search ;)

FREE TOOLS

  1. WORDSTREAM

  2. MOZ ( free 30 day trial)

  3. SEMRUSH ( my personal favorite I use the paid version and it’s great)

Have you tried any of these? If so let me know!

Next week, we’re talking about how to create impactful content and where to place those keywords.

Creatively yours,

Charlotte
